Chicken Residence
This deluxe residence for fowl was built to benefit the Sonoma Country Day School. Designed by renowned Howard Backen of Backen Gillam Kroeger Architects, its construction by Jim Murphy and Associates was auctioned at the Day School’s annual Gala and fundraiser, with chickens raised by Day School students thrown into the turn-key package.
We gathered a few collaborators who donated or discounted materials and their labor, and then a crew of JMA carpenters, led by superintendent Jesse Malone, erected the chicken coop on the highest bidder’s rural property. It’s a handsome home, worthy of the finest hens who have much to cluck about. But, they haven’t a clue that the Backen trademark, lift-n-slide door, got value engineered into hinged windows.
